Better to terminate bathroom vent through roof or exterior wall?

I have the option of doing either one for my bathroom remodel. If all things are the same, is one better than the other? Obviously shorter duct runs are best, but if the duct runs are the same length does one offer better performance for the fan?

Doesn't really matter, but all things being equal I would think a horizontal vent would be preferable (less chance of a water leak).

In our area, many bathroom vents are terminated in the eaves of the house, or ducted 6' or so above the roof joists (i.e. they do not penetrate to the outside).

A vent that is not run all the way to the outside of a home is useless. And would never pass in my area.
Out the wall with the line ever so slightly sloped toward the where it exits would be best. Less chance of the moisture condencing and dripping back in the room.

I agree 100%. AFAIK code requires that they be vented to the outside, but I see many of them in our area that are not.

For what its worth, I always go out the gable when possible, only because I don't want any issues with water leakage. I learned this throughout my years, "there is no such thing as a good hole in a roof" :)
