best way to season firewood?

I'm new to wood seasoning. I have a pile of maple I've been splitting and am getting ready to stack. I just don't know what the best way to go about it is. Any ideas or favorite stacking patterns?

Split in the desired size and stack it where it is up off the ground to protect from ground moisture [away from the house too.] Bark side up is best so it continues to protect the wood from rain if its not covered on the top. Other than that, the more air flow around it the better.

Some folks stack it in orderly rows, about 4'wide, and as long as it needs to be. Others just heap it up in a big pile. I don't really think it makes a difference. Just depends on the space you have for it.

Either way, put it on pallets to keep it off the ground. With a little hunting around you can find 8'x4' pallets, and these are great for firewood.

You can cover the top of the pile with a tarp (not the sides), but unless you're in a really wet climate, I'd just leave it exposed.
