Basic questions...

Hello, I have some very basic questions about the heating and air system in my house. I have an unfinished basement that has one vent and one return running to it. That same unit heats and cools the first floor of the house.

I am currently finishing a bedroom in the basement and want to run a vent and return to that room as well.

My question is how difficult is it to run an additional vent and return to the room? The ductwork is easily accessible and is in the ceiling. Also the vent and return to the unfinished portion of the basement will remain closed. The bedroom will be used frequently and our plan is to leave the vents open.

How much of an effect will running an additional vent have on the unit? What is the easiest way to determine if the unit is capable of that?

Thanks for the help.

Your HVAC system has been designed to heat the entire house. The more you insulate the basement, the more efficient it will become. There should be no problem adding heat and return to the new bedroom. Do a heat loss calculation to determine the amount of air required and thus the size of the heat run for that room.Always install an accessable damper in your new run.
