Basement return air

I'm refinishing my basement and they require me to have a return air supply. Now I know that technically having one in every room is the best idea, but it will be very difficult and awkward to run. So I am planning on putting 1 big register in the main room that can still suck air in under doors if closed.

My question is can I branch right off the main return branch just before the filter to do this? Or do I need to move it up a ways. I just don't want it to pull most of the air from the basement or if being so close to the filter could cause issues.
