Barometric Damper

I had a new oil burning furnace installed last year. It's a Carrier 3 burner unit - don't know the model. The flue is 5" round and exits the top, and there is a barometric damper in the pipe just before it goes into the masonry chimney. The chimney is about 30' high.

I notice a slight oder of oil exhaust when the furnace runs. I also noticed today the BD does not have the screw with weight attached to the flap. Is this ever proper - or should they always have the weight? There is also a little soot on the outside of the damper flap.

Should I go get the weight, and if so, is there an adjustment procedure?

Thanks for any help.

'Frank

Barometric Damper

Post a pic of it. Most of the ones I have seen have a weight and NO you cannot just set it yourself. Needs to be set with a draft gauge for proper overfire draft etc.

Barometric Damper

Sounds like it isn't burning right either. needs to have weigh installed/reinstalled, and then set up properly, after a good cleaning.
