bad stat ?

my issue is = the furnace runs per normal, then shuts off. then it starts right back up and runs for 1 min to several mins, it varies , then shuts off. i have new batteries in the stat, no difference. i am figuring that the stat is bad. but could it be something else ? i am getting a new stat today to try out.

Air filter, dirty A/c coil. Blocked registers, or dirty blower wheel.

i will check the filter, but it was replaced not long ago.
registers are the same.
A-coil was cleaned 1 year ago. and it was NASTY. mostly dog hair. we never had a dog.
the blower wheel does need to be cleaned. but it looked ok last year, and it blows just fine.

this issue just started about 1 month ago.

stat is set to come on at 72, and it goes off at 74. but when it goes right back on, the temp is 73, not 72.

Yep. remove the stat and stuff the hole in the wall with pink insulation. Check for drafts around the stat like a vent blowing on it or sucking on it/return and modify them if necessary.

When you say it comes back on..... is just the fan coming back on or are the burners coming on as well?

burners. it fully starts.

i was talking to my wife. she sees the stat a lot. she said it will go to 73. the furnace will shut off while still on 73. then it will start back up and run till the stat reads 74.

You've changed nothing. But a house changes from season to season.
