AUX not on in defrost

Hi guys,

I have a relatively new split Trane system. It worked well in the summer. Now since it got colder (close to 32 degrees), it goes into a defrost mode but the aux light on the thermostat does not come on and I wonder if something is not connected right or it is normal when the inside temperature is high enough not to warrant the aux? I would really appreciate your help. Aux by itself works fine (for example, when I put the thermostat 3 or more degrees higher that current temp). So it works in regular mode.

Or can it also be that with this thermostat aux is on in defrost but it is just not showing on display? I checked the air during defrost and it not really cold but not warm either. Like from a fan.

My thermostat is Honeywell FocusPRO 5000.

When it goes into defrost, is the air out of the registers cold like A/C or warm? If warm, my guess is that the thermostat is not designed for the aux to light up in defrost.

It sounds OK, they call it tempered. Unless someone sez otherwise I don't believe the aux indicator is supposed to come on.

Your strip heaters may be staged/separated. Its possible that your thermostat is wired to bring on 10KW of aux heat. And your heat pump is wired to bring on 5KW of strip heat that is not connected to the thermostat.

In defrost, if the strip heat is not coming on, the air will be very cold. 15 or more degrees colder then the inside air.
