Default Aux heat during Defrost mode.

4 ton heat pump with VS air handler

The auxiliary heat does not energize in defrost mode. 2nd stage heat does energize when called for. In addition, Emergency heat works as well. Any ideas where to begin the troubleshooting process?

It's simple. When a HP goes into defrost mode it's control board energizes a 24V defrost signal. You just need to tie this signal to the 2nd stage heat terminal at the air handler.

Some contractors don't bother providing for 2nd stage heat during defrost. It's really optional. Defrost doesn't last very long.

Start by checking the wiring from heat pump to air handler as it is up to the heat pump to initiate defrost mode.

This was exactly the case. I discovered that the W2 wire was not hooked up from the defrost board to the air handler. Thanks for the tip.
