audible condensation drops in water heater type B horizontal venting

i can occasionally hear a few drops here and there in my 3" type B horizontal (well, mildly sloped but certainly more horizontal than vertical) venting for my gas water heater, which runs about 8-9 ft from the appliance to the vertical rise into the chimney with a total of 3 90 deg elbows.

i was wondering if this is expected behavior or whether it is a sign of the vent being too long to allow the fumes to condense.

thanks

Your problem would appear to be that the exhaust fumes are condensing in the pipe.

Put more of a pitch on the pipe. What's going to inevitabley occur is sediment will build up and block the inducer port, resulting in your furnace not firing up.

Not to mention horizontal is not proper installation, not even for on inch of vent pipe.

If that means cutting a hole in the roof so you can run the pipe closer and with more of a pitch and installing flashing as well as having a roofing company come out and patch the old hole than so be it.

Or you could move the entire unit. Just get more of a pitch somehow.

My fault, not a gas furnace, a gas water heater. No draft inducer.

impossible. tight ceiling space. with everything that stands in the way, it would be like a $30K project. it would be cheaper to replace the water heater every year perpetually (for the duration of my stay in the house).
