Attic Mounted AC Unit

I'm wanting to install Central Air in my 150 year old victorian home. I do have central heating, but was told by the previous owners that some heating and cooling people told them the duct work isn't sufficient for AC. I don't know much about heating and cooling, so does that make sense?

At any rate, I've heard about those units that can be installed in the attic and you just run some duct work through the ceiling and poof! you've got central air. (like it would be that simple) Does anybody know anything about this stuff and what I should look for?

Yes,

It is possible that the ductwork is undersized to get the proper airflow to install the proper sized air conditioning unit in your home. but I would call a real heating contractor to look at your system and give you a quote before taking the previos homeowners word.

Yeah, I think that's the route I'll take. There's a sub I used to work with on new homes. I think I'll give him a call. Thanks for the advice.

If i knew the size of duct that is existing i could help you out.

Here are a couple of examples.

You need approximately 400 cfm of air for every ton of ac.
2 tons = 2 x 400 = 800 cfm

Duct size for approximately 1 ton = ( 12 x * or ( 16 x 6)

duct size for approximately 2 tons ( 12 x 12 ) 0r ( 20 x 8)

depending on the square fotage of the home you coud put an ac to these sizes.

Let me know what happens

I'm leaving for vacation tomorrow, when I get back I'm gonna head to the basement and take some measurements and I'll post back.
