I have a ranch house in Western PA. I'm figuring up some prices for additional attic insulation. Fiberglass and blown is coming in at about the same, $1,500.00.
I was wondering of anyone could weigh in on this cheaper alternative that I thought up. I have access to many moving blankets, they are the heavy duty kind. I was thinking of layering them in the attic then laying / securing a tarp over top. My total cost on that is like 300 bucks.
I would only do it as a temporary solution. Moving blankets are felt, which is hard to find R values for but I found an undercarpet pad that advertised R 2.1 for a 7/16" pad. I wouldn't recommend using the tarp, as it may act as a vapor barrier (on the wrong side) and I can't imagine it helping.
