Attic Furnace Water Pump

I have a horizontal attic furnace with a pump to drain water when the a/c is on. Tthe pump has a plastic tube that carries the water to a 2nd floor drain. Sometimes the a/c compressor will not come on. It has come on when I have leveled the pump. Yesterday, the pump was level,but the compressor was still off. I shook the pump, manually forced all water down the tube, and the compressor came on. How can I fix this problem? Do I need a new pump or does it just need to be worked on? Can I fix it myself? Thanks.

the float might be weighted down with slime and crap,you have a thin pair of wires going to a hi limit switch when the float gets too high as should.NOTE:do you have an emergency pan under the unit the the air handler and that pump sit it?but back to the pump remove it and clean the tank and float assembly in a sink..first shut the furnace toggle OFF before removing the 2 limit wires can go back either way doesn't matter.might consider sliding a sheet metal pan under that thing with a 3/4 female fitting opening to pipe outside.the pump impeller needs a lite hose spraying to clear it out...then fill it and empty it piece of scrap tube let it cycle with refills before going back in.....if you didn't have a hi water cooling lockout the water would soak the area below major damage..if no pan is there....
