I am contemplating installing an attic fan. From what I've read so far, there seem to be two basic types.....a whole house fan which requires a ceiling vent and just a plain attic fan which is supposed to cool the attic only requiring no ceiling vent. Since I live in southeast Georgia (Brunswick) where the temperatures are hot and humid in the summer and very moderate in winter, I am assuming I should go for the attic only install. The house is brick with a gable end roof. There are louvered vents on either gable which are located at the top of the peak and are triangular in shape. The bottom length of the triangle is 8' and the other two sides are 4.5' long. The soffit vents are 12"x6" and are 8' o.c. on the front and rear of the house. The area of the attic is approx. 8,000 c.f. My questions are these: What size fan would I need (in c.f.m.)? Can I install the unit directly behind the louvered gable vent instead of having to cut a hole in the louvered vent (which would require some serious re-shoring framing)? I don't want to go with a roof vent and I don't want to install it below the gable vent.
Any comments, suggestions, or insights shall be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
