Asbestos

We are going to purchase a 1920's home that has some asbestos around the air ducts in basement. We are conceded about the potential health risks and having three children we want them to live in a healthy environment. What would you do if it was your family? Should I encapsulate it or remove it? The asbestos isnt falling off the duct work and seems to be in tact and the home inspector didn't see it as much of a concern. Please give me your honest answers. Thanks!

If I really loved everything else about the property I'd call an asbestos removal specialist to get a ball park price before the deal goes firm.

If I really loved everything else about the property I'd buy it and remove it myself, then call the nearest landfill and find out how to dispose of it. Honest.

If it's tight and sound I'd leave it alone---or add another wrap around it.

Well first you don't have to buy it and if you already decided then you should call the asbestos removal specialists for removing and disposing it before shifting to the home..!!

Some areas or municipalities have strict regulations regarding who can remove this type of asbestos and how it can be disposed of.
I would check for local restrictions to see if DIY is even an option for you.

Leave it alone, there is no risk with it. If you wish to remove, wet it down with a mix of water, a couple of drops of dish soap and some elmer's glue mixed in a spray bottle. When you pull the tape, use gloves, a proper face mask, and some eye protection. The time it takes to remove, if not that much tape, will be not that much time out of your life.

We had it in our house, and had to remove all of the asbestos tape from all of the old ducts, before they would change out our old Octopus radiant furnace, plus we had to remove all of the duct work, since it was not going to be used for the new system.
