Armstrong furnace won't kick on

I have an Armstrong furnace with a dial thermostat. This morning before I went to work I turned it down to 62 degrees. When I came home and tried to turn it up it would not kick on.

I went downstairs and
checked the pilot...it is still lit
checked the fuse...okay
checked the breakers...all okay

I am thinking it is the thermostat, any ideas?

Do you have a 24 VAC signal between W and C ? what is the voltage between the two wires on the gas control valve?

Armstrong furnace won't kick on

I went to Lowes before looking back at the posts. Bought a brand new manual thermostat and installed it. The furnace kicked on, warmed up, the blower started and about thirty seconds later it kicked off again.
I turned it down to 50 degrees and then back up....same thing.

Tried turning it down and then back up and now it won't kick on again.

Hi Kristamarie

Could the thermostat you have be a Hunter or a Maple Chase by chance?. If it is, see if they have a White Rodgers or a Honeywell. Let me know how it wires, and I will help you through the problems.

Good luck

Thx carrierman,

I bought the Honeywell (manual) and connected the two wires from the furnace to g and w.

Double checked the cycle settings on the thermostat and okay.

Called a technician he came out and he set up his meter in series to the gas valve and it started working and hasn't given up yet. Can only guess there was a loose connection at the gas vavle.

If it acts up again, I'll be back.

By the way, it is an old Armstrong 700 and the tech said it was in wonderful shape. Any idea were to locate any service manuals for it?

Hi Kristamarie

I bet you it will act up again, when it does move the wire that is on G to R and you will have your problem fixed. If you have already figured this out, just disreguard this post. Sorry I missed part of your post. If you have a Locke supply in your area, they should be able to help you. You will need the model# of the furnace to get the proper owners manual. Or you may be able to go online and find it also.

Good luck
Rusty
