Anyone know what is wrong?

Yesterday I noticed ice coming from the CA unit (as seen in picture #1). I went into the basement where I found more ice on the unit (the circled spots in picture #2) and ice on the insulated wire (as seen in picture #2 with the arrow). There were also two spots inside the house where ice was on that same insulated wire (as seen in picture #3).

I put in a new digital thermostat about a month ago and all was fine. I changed the filter yesterday and it was filthy. Last night I turned on the emergency heat (that is why the ice is gone and you see water on the ground in picture #2). It is a heat pump.

Any ideas or suggestions? I called a local HVAC company and no one could look at it until Monday.

You probably did not change the filter in time. So you did not have enough air flow over the coil.

That is what I was hoping for. Do I need to do anything at this point or will it correct itself in time. Right now I'm running on emergency heat.

Just defrost the coil and make sure the filter is clean and fire the ac back up, you should go by the filters recommendations as far as changing them.

How can I defrost? Secondly, the AC hasn't been on (at least I dont think so). I'm in Ohio, no need for AC yet.

get this right you are running your furnace and your a/c is icing up while heat on and a/c is off?

Could be a miswired stat.
Could be just the air filter.
Could be dirty coil.
Could be low on charge.
Could several other things also.

Reversing valve stuck in wrong mode/direction?

When you replaced the t-stat did you use a HP t-stat. Did you use the O terminal?

What is happening is the outdoor unit, the HP is supposed to energize or de-energize a valve when calling for heat. If this valve does not work or is not wired properly at the t-stat, then it will run as if the A/C is calling only. You should have noticed cold air coming from the vents during call afor heat. If not, then the electric heat was probably coming on as well as the A/C.

Could be also the unit was stuck in Defrost. But I think it's a wiring issue or a bad reversing valve.
