another Carrier furnace problem

I have a Carrier gas furnace circa 1983 model 58SS080. Having the typical symptoms inducer runs, pilot lights, burners ignite for a few seconds then go out. I don't think this furnace has a flame sensor, does it? There is a reset button on top by the flue which was extended. I depressed it and this had no effect. So, should I suspect the limit switch? One time the burners ignited for less than a second and then went out. Any help appreciated.

If it does not have a continuous pilot, it will have some sort of flame sensor, which could be in the pilot assembly. Check for it, and make sure it is clean.

Actually, it has a flame sensing electrode/thermocouple in the pilot assembly that must be kept clean. Also, check to make sure that the pilot flame touches the electrode when the pilot is on and when both the pilot and burners are on. If the flames push the pilot off of the sensor, it will shut down.

Thanks Rakes, but that wasn't it. I replaced the whole pilot assembly today and it is still exhibiting the same symptoms. What should I try next?

What happens when it shuts down? Does the pilot stay lit? Does the pilot go out too, and does the spark ignitor come on? Does the inducer motor stay on or shut off? How long until it lights again? (Sorry for the questions about your question, I just need a little more info.)

Actually with the new pilot assembly the burners fire for a minute or so instead of a few seconds. Seems like about when the blower should start up. I pulled the blower door off and ran the furnace and the blower motor wiring was hung up on a big sheet metal screw, when the motor kicked in the wires shot a big fat blue spark and everything shut down. I rerouted the wires and the furnace now works fine. Kind of weird, maybe I had two problems.
