American Standard Heat Pump Freezing up! Tech can't figure it out.
Model number WCH048F100AA 13 SEER 4 TON HEAT PUMP

I live in Az. and when the temperature dips below 40 degrees the unit freezes up and it runs constantly in defrost mode- iced up. I set my thermostat at 70 and the unit will run and run at 65 all night long. In the morning the unit is covered in ice.

The unit is barely 1 year old and it is an American Standard heat pump 13 seer four ton package. The Technician has been out since day one and can't figure this out.

Never mind that this is the 2nd unit that they have brought out and installed. The first one was a total lemon and NEVER HEATED. This is getting very old. I don't know what else to do. They've had a couple of techs out and can't figure this out!!!

Any suggestions??

Can't say for sure from here but it sounds like multiple issues. Thermostat set on 70 and only the HP runs and maintains 65 sounds like a wiring or set up issue.
HP not defrosting could be a lot of things .
Undercharged systems frost up more and faster. Too small of duct work can make the pressures look good in heating but the system still be under charged. All you can do is keep calling them back untill it's fixed. Duct work static, refrigerant charge and wiring should all be checked again.

Just more problems and headaches
Thanks Marty. Now the tech wants to add a heat strip. I don't see how this will help. Won't the unit still run and run in defrost?

I wish I could start over with a new company and new brand of unit. This one is not working out.

Now they are telling me I don't have a warranty! It just keeps getting better and better.

Might want to post the full model number of the unit. Someone may know if it has time and temp defrost, or on demand defrost. they work differently from each other.

Below 40 may be below the thermal balance point of your heat pump. What size is your house.

We get cold so a back up heat source is required since a heat pump could not do it all. I couldn't get an electrician to run the new wires to the panel for $150 so that's a very good deal. That will solve the stat set on 70 and not getting above 65 issue.

Labor is covered by the installer for only the first year unless you purchased an extended labor warranty.

I also give 1 yr labor warranty. But, if my customer had a problem with a unit from day 1 (& it sounds like he has this being the 2 nd unit.) I would cover the labor
