American Standard Freedom 90 Problem

Hello, I have been having a problem with my Freedom 90. When the furnace trys to start, it seems to flame out. Sometimes is works fine, sometimes it takes several attemps to start, and sometimes I have to shut the furnace off to get it to start. Any ideas? Thanks

American Standard Freedom 90 Problem

I've been having the same problem with my Freedom 90 as well.

I had an HVAC tech come out and he said the flame sensor was quite dirty and he cleaned that. He also vacuumed out and cleaned the interior of the unit, as it appeared that it had never been serviced. After that, the unit worked fine and I have had no more system lockouts.

However, occasionally the furnace will still take several tries to stay lit. I can hear it light, burn for about a minute, then it goes out and tries again. Eventually, on the 2nd or 3rd try, it will stay lit and then the blower motor kicks on and everything is fine. The frustrating thing is that this will only happen on occasion usually the heating cycle works fine.

Anybody have any ideas why this is still intermittently happening?

That problem is almost always the flame sensor. If it has been cleaned and is still an intermittent problem it should be replaced and make sure everything is tight when installed. The sensor reads to ground so it needs solid connection on the screw securing it.

It usualy reads from the flame rod through the flame to the head of the burner it is in front of. Make sure the head of the burner and flame rod are both clean. You can use steel wool to clean them.
