American Standard AUC080 blower

The blower motor on my furnace does not operate. With fan on and thermostsat set at cool condensing unit operates, exhaust blower in furnace operates but main blower does not. Diagnostic code flashes a steady slow red light. Unit was operated quite a bit this summer, but had turned everything off for 4-5 days due to mild weather. Turned on a/c this morning and later noticed no air from vents and furnace breaker in main elec panel was tripped. Fan will spin by hand. Is this just a worn out motor after 13 years?

American Standard AUC080 blower

In heating mode does the blower work? Does the unit fire up and blow hot air?

There's a little silver canister, most likely oval shaped with two wires from the blower motor attached to it, called a capacitor which may have gone bad. It's the cheapest fix IF indeed this is the problem.

Sometimes they explode, visibly letting you know that they are bad. It could be that the top of the cap, where the wires are, is rounded up as in blown upwards, or it could be leaking an oily/jelly type substance. If any of these two tell tale sings are present I'd first change the cap.

Now it could show no signs of being bad such as stated above and still be bad. You'd need an electrical meter that tests microfarads (uf) or you can simply buy another cap ($10-ish) and replace it and see what happens. You may get lucky.
