American Standard 5000 furnace

Furnace works fine for a while but then unexpectedly stops. when checked I get red light blinking 2 times. furnace was bought in 1989-1990.When the power is turned off and back on, it works fine for weeks. it has happened two days in a row this week.

Somewhere on the furnace will be a legend to show you what those flashes mean.

Sounds like the Hot surface igniter may be bad, found same question on another website and they said tech replaced the hsi.

This is what it looks like http://www.amazon.com/FURNACE-REPLAC.../dp/B0092PZ8S8. Not saying this is yours

multiple possibilities for "ignition lock out" - flame sensor needs cleaned or the HSI is not getting hot enough to light the gas, or the gas valve is not opening, or the gas if off or there is no gas.
