airhandler (HK61EA005) or transformer problem ?
 
s*@t hit the fan for me whe I removed my t-stats off the wall to paint. I then put them back on and I saw that they were not working. I bought only one new t-stat to see if it was a problem with the old t-stat still nothig worked. I later read from other post that you have to turn the power of at the panel when removing and installing t-stats. wow just experienced dejavu! Any way i unscrewed the covers from my carrier units and I noticed that the one upstairs had a blown fuse. I knew this because the wire between the hardened clear plastic of the amp was not connected. I also noticed that Im getting aC power to the transformer but going from the transformer to the air handler (HK61EA005). I am not reading 24V. Im not reading any voltage. What I did was place a multimeter where the fuse insert is. In other words I removed the bad fuse and stuck a multimeter black pin on one lead of the fuse socket and the red lead on the other fuse socket, no voltage was read, but i know for sure that the multimeter is working. Also I hear a humming sound coming from inside the carrier unit around the blower housing. Sounds like a good kind of humming.

Ok so I have pinpointed my problem down to:

1) a new transformer because I cant transform the voltage from 220 to 24V.

2) a new fuse because the old one is blown.

do I need to also add a new air handler and t-stat?

Please confirm that I am on the right path.

Also ive been reading about some capacitor that gets warn out? I havent found this yet. Where might it be hiding?

Is there anything I can check outside at the condesor unit. Perhaps a switch was set or something that I need to manually reset?

You won't read voltage across a fuse holder that way. Unless you had the thermostat wired up. And it either was calling for heating cooling, or uses power itself.

Checking for 24 volts from the transformer should be done by checking across the 2 wires that come from the transformer.

The mod number you posted looks more like a heater kit number, then an air handler number.

The capacitor will be near the motor. Usually on the blower housing. Its not your problem though.

Bet a new fuse is all you need.

So what i did now was read the current across the fuse slot with the multi meter and read 10mA.

So what i did now was remove the two wires coming from the transformer secondary and stuck the black pobe in the brown wire and he red probe in he red wire and I didn't read ay voltage.

I put the part number "HK61EA005" into google and several hits came back with airhandler. Al i know is that the part number "HK61EA005" is a board and I see that the secondary's of the transformer connects to it as well as the wiring from the thermostat

Ok i believe you. I think my problem is the transformer because I cant read 24 V from the transformer secondary wiring. Can you help me determine if my assumptions are valid and if i tested the voltage of the transformer secondary correctly.

Oh i added a new fuse too.

Check to see if the transformer is getting 240 volt.
If it is. And your not getting 24 volts on the secondary, then the transformer is toast.

shut the furnace power off at the toggle switch on the side...remove the 240v wires on the primary side of the TR and the secondary side leave them hanging and not touching anything.put you multimeter to read OHMS and ring out the both sides of the TR...first put the leads together to see what the meter should read.:eek:.looking for a reaction no actual numbers in ohms.now test each pair of wires on the 240V prim side and then the 24Vsec. side if you see either as if the meter probes where seperated not touching the winding of the TR is shot either side will call for a new one
