air return vents

In our single story 1600sqft open floor plan house, we only have 2 air returns, and they are literally 3 feet apart. One is in the dining room wall, and one is in the hallway wall, adjacent to the dining room. Obviously, this is directly above the HVAC unit in the basement. They are both 36x8" vents placed near the top of the walls.

!) Should i be thinking about relocating one of them to another part of the house or adding more returns?

2)Is the higher vent placement (near the top of the wall) perform better than floor level returns? My prior 3 houses had returns located at floor level.
