Air handler transformer gone bad

hello guys,

I'm new to the blog so please take is easy on me . Let me start with a little background on my furnace problem. I have an airhandler made by "First Company" model 30VAQ3. The first time i started noticing a problem was last year when the heater wont shut off on its own even when the thermostat reached its desired temp. i let it go bcoz it was the end of winter and thought its the thermostat and will change it next year. Another reason for delaying it was bcoz the AC turned on and off without any problem controlled by the same thermostat. Well this Year the same problem started happening when i turned the heater back on and finally on Friday i shut the unit off to look at the internals and now it wont turn on again. Called a repair guy and he said transformer has gone bad and wanted to charge me 300$ for the whole deal. i said no thanks and bought a 20 $ transformer from the store and getting ready to hook it up. My concern is that something made it go bad and i suspect its the wiring from the thermostat. Another piece of info is that i did replace the thermostat but that did not fix the problem in the beginning of this cold season. Please advice me on whether my suspicion of the wiring could be correct and how to test this theory.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Add a 3 or 5 amp fuse on the 24V side of the transformer, if the fuse blows replace the thermostat wire, Make sure you have the right Milliamp transformer for your system

Air handler transformer gone bad

POWER OFF
1-Replace the transformer
2-Disconnect all wires from Thermostat
3-Disconnect all wires from board control at Air Handler
4-On the Air Handler connect together all the wires combinations.
5-On the Thermostat, with a multimeter start doing continuity test.

If you find a short or open wire you found problem.
