Air Handler Fan Sporadic

I have a Janitrol air handler in the attic and a heat pump outside.

Noticed that the outside unit was running but no fan or air coming out of the vents. This has happened several times over the last few weeks.

I checked the air handler this morning and the coils were iced up in the handler from lack of airflow/no fan. Fan was not running....

I turned off the power and removed the access panel. Fan looked fine.
Turned the power back on and the fan came on and ran normal for about six hours.

Now the fan is not running again...

Any ideas as to possible issues? Capacitor on the motor or a sticking relay somewhere?

Thanks

Have you been using the unit for heating or cooling when the problem occurs?

For cooling....

The problem originated just a few weeks ago.

Seems to be the fan side versus the outside unit. The outside unit seems to be working normally. Just the fan never comes on to circulate the cool air.

Sorry but one more question...if you switch the fan mode at the thermostat to "on", instead of "auto", does it run consistently?

Even switching the fan to the "on" position doesnt allow the fan to come on.

You may have a defective fan relay, or defective solid state relay board eighther would be in the blower cabinet or furnace, your owners manual or cabinet door should have the unit schematic identifying the interior components.

Both components, and the motor can be tested for proper operation with a volt/amp meter.

If your unit has a blower door safety switch, make sure it is depressed for testing.
