Question

Air Filters - One Dirty, One Clean

Hello all,

I just changed the filters in my A/C units (last change was 3 months ago) and found that one was dirty and the other was clean. Both units were installed in the attic at the same time. The unit with the clean filter services the downstairs of our house, and the unit with the dirty filter services the upstairs. Here is what they looked like side-by-side.

Why would one filter be filthy while the other is still clean?

Thanks!

Down stairs have carpet and up stairs not?
Have the windows been open down stairs?
Any work on the house been going on down stairs?
My guess also would be that down stairs would be used more, cook in, outside door opening and closing more.
Any moisture or cooking grease will cause the filter to trap more dirt.

Thanks for the reply. Actually, it's the opposite: the upstairs is the carpeted area because that's where the kids' rooms are, and the downstairs is all wood and tile. We don't have the windows open very often, but when we do we usually air out the entire house. That's part of what has me stumped!

Thanks!

Do your kids spend most of their time up or downstairs?

Have the ducts cleaned in the whole house, the next filter change will be equal.

Are both filters located in the ceilings?

Both filters are in the units in the attic. The kids play all over the house.

So you do not run filters at the grills? You have return grills in the ceilings with ducts that lead to the return side of the furnace and the filter is there, in the unit? Can you take some pics?

First of all that is not dirt in the filter. It is fuzz and lint from carpet and
clothing. So you have that more up stairs then down.
The next factor is that the upper story picks up heat a lot faster, so the upper unit will run 3 tomes more than the lower story. Usually when you cool the upper story, the lower does not need that much cooling so it won't come on much. Paul
