Air Conditioner

How far from the air handler can an air conditioner compresser unit be located? What are the extra costs, trade offs be for remote location?

50 feet is what the manufacturers recommend. After that you have to increase the size of the larger copper suction line and that gets REAL expensive. Can also develop problems with oil return to the compressor and shorten the life of it if the line is not installed PERFECTLY according to the manufacturers spec. We avoid going over 50 feet like the plague.

Read this post to see what can go wrong when the line is too long or not installed properly.

With increased sizing and proper piping techniques I have seen with my own eyes lineset lengths of 100 feet.
Every manufacturer will have this info at the ready iuf needed. The units I seen were Trane but I would expect that otrher companies won't allow it.
I'm not even sure that with the new scroll compressors in Trane if its OK .You would need to find out as I beleve its not the normal and niot the same forb every unit.

Virtually all brands allow long line sets. Sometimes special piping considerations are done/accounted for. There are capacity derates for the longer line set run. Most install manuals don't contain all the info needed for a long line run. Sometimes its better not to increase the vapor line, due to oil return concerns.

I have line sets in excess of 180 foot. Still original compressors, after 15 years.
