adjustable air conditioning filters

I need filters of size 13.5" by 21.5". They don't carry this size at the big box stores.

But they do sell adjustable filters, However they are adjustable UP from 14" and only in 1" I increments, mine is smaller and 1/2".

Looking at the adjustable filters seems it is just two plastic glides with holes at 1" spacing. Seems it is pretty trivial to cut it to 13.5" and drill a single 1/2" hole for it to work.

Or is it more complicated than it appears?

I'd be tempted to just order a bunch off the internet. not much into fabricating something that should be easily found.

I looked into that. It seems to be several times more expensive with the odd sizes. A pack of 3 sells for $57 + shipping. I looked at making a custom aluminum holder frame and that's $75. With that I could just buy oversized filter pads and cut it to size and put it inside the frame.

Funny that whoever owned this place last probably were not happy with the odd size expensive filter either, so he put in a filter grill on the wall...and for whatever reason, the filter grill takes filters 19-1/2" X 15-1/2", another odd size! You can't make this stuff up.

I believe that filter grill is actually 16 by 20 which is a very common size and are almost always undercut on purpose, the name is just 16x20 but if you put a tape measure to it it comes out at 15.5 x 19.5. All the filters in my shop are undercut up to 1/2" and it is actually harder to find the nominal sized ones than the undercuts
Buy one that says 16x 20 and put in the filter grill and it will probably fit

I didn't know they were undersized. I do know when I initially opened the filter grill, the filter in there wasn't the right size. It was crumpled and bent so I thought whoever put the filter there didn't get the right size. Therefore I took extra care to measure the opening and it's 15.5"x19.5". I will try a 16x20 and see.

The 13.5"x21.5" size is not a measurement but what the Carrier AC handler specified.

Ya that does sound very odd size. Just today I had a filter grill that used a 10x30x1 filter and no wholesaler or even HD has them around here so I had them special ordered through a wholesaler. Maybe you can call carrier and get a part number if its one of their products. I forgot to ask earlier if its a 1 inch thick or is it more ie 2,4, or 5?

I did a quick search on the internet and found this "cut to fit" furnace filter.
