adding central air - mount outside components on roof?

We live in an 1500sqF twin, with gas forced hot air heat. We're thinking of adding central air, but outside space is at a premium. While our house is 3 floors tall, the back part of the house is only 2 stories and ends in a flat roof (around 15' x 17' in size. My question is can the "outdoor" components normally found in a central air system be mounted on this roof and then plumbed down to the basement to tie into the existing system?

If so, are there any major caveats going this way, such as dramatically increased installation costs or reduced efficiency.

Depends on how easy it is or isn't to get teh unit on the roof.
Service cost down the road may be slightly higher.

Takes longer to get up and down on a roof, then just walking around to the back yard.

Some minor install considerations for oil return, but nothing major.

shame, sounds like that would make a nice're MUCH better off if you can put it on the ground... how you gonna get the unit up there [crane], will roof support the weight[code], will it be in sun most of day[size],service[$$$$], noise/vibration.???if you do it-go with best company, regardless of price. installation and proper sizing[very techie] will be everything on this job.
