Add-on Wood furnace
Due to the cost of fuel, I am thinking of putting an add-on wood furnace in my basement. I already have an oil furnace.
Here are my questions:
1. How can I leverage my existing ductwork? Can I pipe the heat output of the wood furnace into my oil furnace plenum?
2. I have 6" flexible ductwork coming out of my oil furnace to my heat registers. Will that withstand the heat of a wood furnace?
3. Can I tee in my wood furnace smokestack to my existing pipe coming from my oil furnace to my chimney?
Thanks. Any help is appreciated.
As long as the flex duct is not right at the stove, you should be alright. Duct is cheap, so you could always replace the sections that are close to the stove with some solid material.
Most state regs would not let you combine the stacks from these two units (although mine is). But you need to check with your local office on that.
I have a similar setup. My furnace is about 50 years old. The wood stove has a sealed plenum above the fire box and there are two 6" ducts that connect to this plenum then to the supply and return plenums on the furnace. It works pretty nice, but in my case, the stove is quite old and needs to be replaced, as the internal draft (slide gate) does not work anymore, so the fire tends to burn hot and fast.
Good Luck with this.
Your new wood furnace will come with an I.O.M., instalation operating manual. It will describe the manufacturers instalation requirements. Then you need to pull a permit with your local Mechanical Division, and review the code requirements that are relevent.
All your questions will be answered. You can do this yourself, but do it right the first time.
JAVAN...how did you make out with that basement wall?
No progress on the wall yet. There is a definite depression on the outside, so we certainly have a grading problem, but I can do nothing until until the rain stops.....
