AC Sounds Great...Feels Terrible!

As the long hot DC summer comes to an end (thank god) my AC has decided it's had enough. It sounds like it has since we moved in but for some reason it just stopped pumping any air (hot or cold) through the vents. It makes all the right noises, but there is literally NO air flow through the vents. I think this may have happened during one of the "fake falls" that we had when we thought the heat was gone so we turned the AC but were then forced to turn it back on.

Does anyone have any ideas on why it would sound OK from what I can tell, but wouldn't pump ANY air through the system?

Assuming you have a heat pump is the "normal" sound your hearing the outside unit, the inside unit or both running?

Are you getting any airflow at all coming out of the vents?

The inside sounds like it's running fine although it sounds a little weak. I don't know if that's subconsciously happening b/c I know it doesn't work or what, but from what I could tell the outside was running. It was dark when I realized it so I have to go out today and give it a good inspection but from what I could tell it was running.

There was ZERO air flow coming through the vents though, that's what confused me. The intakes weren't taking IN any air and the vents definitely weren't blowing OUT any air.

I would first check to make sure that your furnace filters are not clogged up and then check to see if your blower motor on the furnace is running at speed. If it's turning at all, but not up to speed, it may be a bad capacitor. If it is not running at all there will be other things to check.
