AC cycling on and off

Before I make a fool of myself with the contractor I would like to ask about our new Lennox Premiere AC unit. When we set it to start running it goes through what seems a weird sequence of events. It starts and then stops right away. This goes on for a couple minutes and then it runs as we expect it to. The house lights seem to flicker the slightest amount during the "cycles". Is this normal?

No it is not normal and you should call him ASAP. the compressor may be having a hard time starting and if it does it too many times could get seriously damaged. may have a weak capacitor or other issues.

might be tripping low pressure if it is within first 30secs then being single phase as a frig needs to equalize..so it tries to start against unequal pressures and trips on internal of compressor...need a time delay thru the stat or one added into 24v out in condenser...

what you describe is not normal ..you need service before you damage unit I agree with yuri may be just a weak capacitor...or may be something more serious......service call is cheap compared to replacing compressor ben sr
