Default AC cycles frequently when on

Sorry if this isn't terribly descriptive but I dont really know HVAC systems besides in cars. When the AC is cycling on, it will kick for a couple minutes then shut off before reaching desired temp (condensor and blower) The thermo will flash "Cool On" signaling it is in compressor safety mode and waits a few minutes before turning the AC back back on.

The best I can figure is that maybe its a problem with the thermostat itself? I'll gladly call someone out here if its more serious but if its just a dieing thermo or something rather simple I'll take car of it myself.

What make and model stat do you have?

How long is the on cycle?

Does it reach the desired temp you have it set for?

On cycle is generally only a few minutes. It will sometimes run a full cycle if I have left it off for a day or so.

When it does the short cycles it does not reach desired temp.

For the few minutes that it does turn on it blows nice and cold.

It could be a few things.

If it was a float switch breaking power to thermostat, I would think it would be happening all the time.

Check cooling cycle rate.
Push and hold fan button and up arrow at the same time (10 secs.)
once in configuration mode use next until at #9. It should be around a 4 if higher use down arrow to set to 4, if at 4 go down to 1. select done and see if that helps.

If this doesn't help it could be something breaking power to the thermostat and starting time delay feature, but again this would happen no matter how long it has beeen off.

It was set to 4. Now set to 1. AC has been on 15 minutes without shutting off. I'll see how it holds up now. Thanks much.
