AC compressor replacement?

I have a six year old Amana central AC unit. It blows ice cold air and seems to be working well. During a spring check-up this week the technician pointed out that the compresser which is rated for 14.4 amps was only drawing 7.8 amps. The outside temp. was 78 f. He said the the low amp draw was an indication the the compresser was failing and should be replaced. System freon pressures were at nominal.
Sounds strange to me. Was he selling compressers or was he right?
Thanks
Mac

AC compressor replacement?

Correct me if I'm wrong and I know you guys will, but 14 amp. would be start up amps not running amps. right?
If the compressor is going bad it would draw more amp's not lower amps.

AC compressor replacement?

the amp tag on any thing motor or compressor is a rating it should never be at that number..if your Liquid Line was too hot to touch on the hottest of days with the unit running maybe near there.the amp reading on a condenser is related to the head pressure and the inlet are..if you put a water hose on a running condenser and read an amprobe the head would drop along with the amperage.cover the top of the condenser to block the discharged air the pressure rises along with the head.i have servcied semi-hermetic compressors with valve plates and valves in question a trick there is to throttle the discharge servcie valve to see if the head rises worn valves react very slowly to that trick....operating pressures and amperages are on your hottest day with the sun banging the condenser..still not near that compressor rating but maybe 12.0A

AC compressor replacement?

Fire him and never call them again. It hurts the reputable Company's when techs out there do stuff like that. Sounds like he was trying to sell.
In the Spring the Humidity and temperatures are low and there's not much load on the system, less load less amp draw. On 95deg days with high humidity that's when the compressor is pulling the highest amps.

the only thing not normal about this is the tech that checked it ...wow scares me to think with some of us close to retiring what our trade my become....... honesty is and will always be the best policy...

AC compressor replacement?

THANKS TO ALL!! I sort of suspected something was wacky, but since I'm not that knowledgable about AC thought I would check.
Thanks Again
Mac

AC compressor replacement?

heat effects the system from what is produced or the actual days temp.washing the condenser inside out in aug/july keeps that amperage down$$$$..just check that liquid line on those real hot days the unit heat either rises out the fan or stays on the LL into the air handler..

RLA is only what the compressor should draw while its running at its full rated load. Which is generally at a condensing temp of 130 and an evaporator temp of 45.Most compressors never draw the listed RLA.
