AC compressor

IN a condo with an 8 year old Carrier Unit. Was told the compressor burned out and should replace the entire unit rather than just the compressor because of the warranty. Is that necessary

At 8 years of age, no reason to replace the whole system or condenser. They need to to determine what burned out the compressor.

don't tell me.... but I AM wondering who the "snake oil salesman" is, who is trying to sell you on that one. Ask them to exp;lain why repair is not deemed feasible then get 1 or 2 more companies to provide their opinions and quotes.

Uh. could it be the cost of the R-22, labor and compressor could be close to the cost of a new 410A system? If its a 1.5-ton system, it may be really close.

GEEEZ REALLY? Never thought of the R22 angle..Can't it be removed and then put back in the system or is that not allowed anymore. And I suppose the unit is installed in such a manner that it takes 3 guys and a monkey to get at it. You'd think the compressor would be easily accessible. Glad it's not me. Give me a 50,000,000 btuh boiler any time!

Depends on what is wrong with the compressor pappy. I dont reuse 22 on a burned out compressor with acid formation but will if it is just locked up. Even then R22 doesn't cost that much.

If you recover the R22 through a clean up filter. And then when you put it back into the system you take it out as vapor and run it through a clean up filter, you won't have an acid problem, as far as the refrigerant having been contaminated.
