6" oval to round adapter
1 Attachment(s)
I have an 6" equivilent oval stack that goes from the basement to the 2nd floor... I'm working on moving duct right now they ducted it down below the joists using a bunch of 45 degree elbows then ran flext duct from the oval shape to the main plenum... well we wanted to put a new ceiling up in there instead of a drop one and decided to move the duct to run with the joists instead of overlapping them... the stack comes down into the back end of the joist cavity so I have about 2" behind it and 13 infront to work with... then it goes perpendicular out... I wanted to run a duct down the joist and use a L adapter to go from 6" round to 6" oval, but no one around me seems to carry them attached is an image of what I need drawn up... would one of these fit into a joist cavity? they are 16" OC of course and are 2x10's for the joists... I tried a temporary solution to this in taking off the set of 45 degree elbows and took the stack that comes out of the ceiling and connected flex duct right up to it by streaching it into an oval then doing a ~90 degree bend in the duct to follow the joist out then connected it to the plenum... works fine and all, doesnt seem like the flex duct is compressed anywhere or anything, and airflow seems about the same as it was in the past... should I just keep it this way or get a metal adapter from the oval to round then go with the insulated flex from there?

I've made oval to rounds before, but never one in boot form like your drawing. That's going to be hard to make, let alone find in manufactured form.

I've seen them prefab for sale in the past, but figures when I want one, no one has them

Call your local heating and cooling/plumbing supply house and ask for an "oval to round wall boot". I used to see them at Menard's too.

Its a common item here, at HVAC supply houses.

do you think something like that would fit into a joist cavity and not go below a 2x10's bottom? dont have dimensions on one of these or any sites that have dimensions of one? thanks!

Don't have dimensions on them either.

It's called an "oval end boot". I frequently use these to transition to 3X8 (ovaled 6" pipe) which fits into 2X4 studded walls. The oval end boots, and oval angle boots, that I install do fit within joist spaces provided that the pipe from above doesn't come down too low. When inserting the boot into the oval pipe be sure that the oval part of the boot doesn't close in on its' self. If it does, you inserted it too far or may need to cut it down.

OK just throwing in my 2 cents here, as I have the same issue in an upstairs bedroom with a small run in a 2 x4 exterior wall, which I need to insulate.
This oval in this picture runs lengthwise along the boot, which could offset into a wall parallel to the joist below. I have seen these, but if your wall stack to the vent is at the end of a joist at 90 degrees and requires oval pipe as mine is it would need the oval to run across the boot wouldnt it. Do they also make a transition boot of this type for oval pipe in a 2 x4 end wall or do the only make a boot in a box form.

They make it on both configurations.
