do they typically install in the same location as the standard filters?
The install is typically customized to your particular set-up. The filter could be on the bottom of your unit, the side, on somewhere along the return path. It all comes down to accessability first and preference 2nd.
I've heard the 5 inch filters typically could last anywhere from 6 months to 2 years depending on your set-up and how often you leave your blower on and at what speed and how much dust is going through it, etc.
It is ironic but the more clogged your filter becomes the better it is at filtering......the down side is that your static pressure could build up to a point where it causes problems for your system that could affect airflow as well as system life. Personally I check my filter with a dwyer static pressure guage every few months to make sure the pressure is not building to a point where I would have an issue.
Also, if you have a variable speed blower........ as your filter clogs the blower will try to maintain airflow and thus use more energy....depending on your set-up it might not make sense trying to get the maximum last bit of life out of your filter to save a few bucks if the clogged filter is costing you more in electric to force the same amount of air through it...
