2 questions about this insulation

Hey all, I have a few questions about this insulation.

Our house is a split level duplex built in 1983. Both of the basement bedrooms have these vent holes in the closets. I'm not really sure where they go or why, but for some reason the previous owners stuffed them with insulation.

I think I know why they did it, this house has no East/West facing windows, so natural air flow is non-existent. For this reason, it gets very hot upstairs. I think maybe they were concerned about any warm air in the basement escaping upstairs and making it even hotter.

So can anyone educate me on what these holes are even for, and why the previous owner might have stuffed them?

Side note, yes that's a popcorn ceiling that I'm currently in the process of getting tested for asbestos. As such I'm a little paranoid about asbestos in general. Is this insulation just straight up fiberglass or should I be worried it might be asbestos? My understanding is "asbestos insulation" is vermiculite... that's definitely not what this is.

Thanks for your insight!

Could be they are oops holes if they're in the closets. As in, they made them there by mistake.
remove insulation, run blower. See if air come out, or is drawn in.

Could be they made the closet too cold in the winter. Or when the A/C ran.

Sorry to get back so late, thanks for the reply! They might be oops, I don't really feel the need to get in and tear it out and make a new project for myself. But I am wondering about the asbestos, is there any reason to suspect this insulation or am I just bit by the asbestos paranoia? BTW the popcorn ceiling came back negative, phew.

Looks like its just fiberglass insulation.

So doubt you need to worry about it.
