Burners were short cycling. Filter was very dirty and inside of furnace compartments were very dusty. I cleaned everything and installed a new filter and igniter. Furnace fires and keeps running now. Since it is summer I'm not comfortable this is a permanent fix! Could this have been the problem?

That furnace has a bad history of cracked heat exchangers. Which may have been made worse by a lack of airflow/overheating. I would get a experienced tech to check it for safety reasons.

Those furnaces did have a problem with the heat exchanger popping the rings.

They also carry a 20 year warr on the exchanger.

Try to find a comfortmaker dealer.
