1969 Reznor garage heater, worth using or buy new one?
A neighbor gave me his old garage heater. He hasn't used it in the 10 years he's lived in the house. I'm trying now to decide if it's worth hooking up or if it should just be scrapped. I want to heat a roughly 3-car, 1-storey space for my workshop.
The label on it says: Reznor/ITT Model XA-100 ser 2. 80,000 BTU, serial number UC933N43. From the Reznor site, the serial number tells me that it was made in roughly 1969.
I need it to run on propane. The label says it's natural gas, but there were no lines running to it in my neighbor's garage. He says there were propane tanks out back when he moved in...but there were no propane lines running to it either. So, I'm not sure what fuel it actually runs on.
I've tried a few searches online to find Reznor parts suppliers to see if a propane orifice is available. I haven't come up with much. And the two I contacted via their web sites haven't responded.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

count the burners and divide the number by the BTUs, something like 80000 btu's/4 burners =20,000 btus per burner, then pull one of the orifices out and look at the numbers, there are plenty of burners orifices charts all over the net, the chart tells you the orifice output for NG or propane.
orifices in many cases are interchangable, you dont need a reznor orifice, could be any other brand, you also need a new sprig for the gas valve.
if you post the orifice number I could tell you whats the output.

cjett: I've been to the Reznor site to check for manuals and parts availability. According to their site, parts aren't available. So, I guess I'll need compatible parts from another manufacturer or old stock for some supplier.
hvactech: I'll disassemble and check for the orifice numbers like you suggested...it will probably have to be this weekend. Is there a way to tell by looking at them if they're for NG or propane? Also, let's say they are propane, how do I know if they're in good shape or need to be replaced?

orifices dont go bad, you may have spiderwebs, bugs or dust in it, nothing compressed air cant clean, there are numbers stamped on the orifices post them and I'll tell you what its rated for.
