1-Stage vs. 2-Stage Heat pump

I just bought the LUX TX9000TS thermostat to install on my Goodman AC/heatpump unit.

I am not familiar with the differences between 1-stage and 2-stage heat pumps.

If I installed the thermostat as a single stage unit instead of a 2-stage unit, would I have problems? If so, what would they be? Should I take this thing back and get another model?

I am not an HVAC specialist, but I do know that all components should match each other. If you try to put together a "Frankenstein" system, you will lose the benefits of expensive equipment. It is best to bite the bullet and pay someone with competence and integrity to do it right.
