Question

Woodpecker Loves My Maples...

hi
i have three fairly young maple trees and one oak in my back yard. i noticed today that the maples have many many holes in them about 5ft high on their trunks. could this harm the trees? i dont think its doing them any good. anyway to keep a pesty woodpecker away from them??? the woodpecker(s) doesnt seem to care about the oak. is it the sap of the maple that attracts the bird????...bob

Most of a woodpecker's diet consists of insects and grubs.

They are probably finding lots of insects under the bark of the maple trees.

You could try diverting the woodpeckers with a feeder so they can get an easy meal instead of damaging your young trees. Woodpeckers love suet, but you will want to get the type that only woodpeckers can get to, or else all the suet will get eaten up by starlings and other nusiance birds. Here is a link for an ideal woodpecker feeder: http://www.duncraft.com/BirdsChoice-...andwich-Feeder

This site also sells "scare tape," a reflective tape that you can hang strips of in places where you want birds to avoid. I haven't personally tried it, but it is supposed to be much more effective than plastic owls!

Not a good thing if these are young trees. And 5 feet seems awfully low for a woodpecker to be working away. Can you here it at it? Or see it in action?

How big are the holes? I am wondering if you have some sort of boring insect. If you do you could encourage it to read more and watch a variety of movies to be less boring or call a tree specialist that can treat the tree with an infused insectiside.
