Question

Wooden Excalibur

Nobody here seems to be strong enough to pull this out by hand. It's the stabilizing 1x1 (redwood?) that came with the tree, which is a Myoporum Laetum 'carsonii' planted about three months ago.

We call it Excalibur, for the sword that's stuck in the stone. I've been trying to jiggle it and loosen it every couple of weeks now for the last 3 months, wet soil, dry soil, whatever. I stop, thinking it's only going to tear the young roots. My big burly friend nearly twisted his back and nearly pulled the entire tree out with it (about a month after planting).

I've cut it down to about a foot sticking out of the ground, settling for maybe leaving it there forever. I hope the fine roots haven't grown into the grain. The other pieces at the corners are the tree staking.

Is there a special tool that I can use to get Excalibur out? Other ideas?

How about scruff away an inch or two of soil and cut it?

You mean cut it below the surface and leave it in there? I might just do that.
