Wood Fence Gate Width

Hello,

We are in process of installing 6ft (treated wood) privacy fence. Initially I wanted 4 or 5ft wide gate to allow easy access for commercial mowers. Is it advisable to have double wide 3ft gates instead since 4 or 5ft are too heavy?

Thank you!

Got it thank you. I apologize for stupid question but I presume you can request one of the doors which will be used the least to be "anchored" or have some stop? Just curious what term to use to describe this to my installers?

And structure on the hinge side, if a swinging gate, would have to be robust. You would have to brace/turnbuckle it and/or put a wheel or something under the non-hinge corner. If you had room for a sliding gate, that might be doable but with a hefty track for it to ride along.

The fact of the matter is you will not need the full width of a large gate all the time anyhow.

Easiest way to anchor the side of the double gate that does not swing all the time is with a rod that anchors down through a plate and then into a hole in the sidewalk. This is fairly standard gate hardware so your contractor should know what you want.

Very informative post! I think a gate can be very helpful for keeping wildlife out of gardens.
