will edging keep winter ice off walk?

Didnt realize sidewalk was so low and held winter water so that it turns to a skating pond on warm days then cold days. is that why they 'used' to edge all walks ???in the olden days??(defined as digging a 2-3 inch square trench along the walk)

Is this a good way to keep winter water off walks??

Too late for this winter, just thinking ahead till next fall.

If your sidewalk is lower than the ground around it and it holds water than edging it may do the trick. The sidewalk should be graded so that water will drain off of it. Figure out the direction the sidewalk is graded and then edge it on that side. If that doesn't take care of all of the water you may want to dig a little bit large trench (maybe 1' wide x 1'-2' deep) lay down a filter fabric and fill it 3/4 the way with #57 stone or pea gravel. Cover the top with filter fabric and then put some nice organic soil mixed with a little bit of sand so the soil drains well.

Water flows Downhill....

If your walkway happens to Be the bottom of the hill,.. It's going to hold water....

Regrade the slope to get rid of the water...

It could be, but I strongly suggest asking professionals about your concern.
I know they have some sort of free assessment.
