White clover - annual or perennial ?

Hi! Just wondering if white clover is an annual or a perennial as I'm thinking of planting some in my garden. If it's an annual I'll wait until the spring to plant some. If it's a perennial and I'm in zone 5A, Montreal, Canada could I plant some now or is it too late since the fall is just around the corner? How long before it grows too?
