Where does patio drainage go to?

Sorry for a newbie question but I have been trying to figure out where runoff on a future paver patio would drain to.

The pavers will be in my backyard and I can only think that I need to run a long pipe from the backyard to the front yard, drill a hole through the sidewalk and drain it to the gutter.

Is this correct, or am I overthinking this?

The primary part of this two part discussion is a decision. The figuring-out comes second.

Is the back yard high enough that an underground pipe will slope down all the way to the front yard and still slope down when it reaches the gutter?

You may need a pumping station (a pit with a sump pump) somewhere in the middle like more in the front yard.

Tunneling under a sidewalk, even for a 3 inch diameter hole, can be tricky without weakening the sidewalk.

If you made a subtle wide ditch (a swale) in the lawn, would the water flow out to the front without an underground pipe?

There is a downward slope that starts going towards the street. Is there any way to divert the drainage without having to drill a 3 inch hole through the sidewalk?

Chris - you need to talk to your local municipality. In many places it is illegal to simply divert it over the curb. They will be helpful in letting you know which route you should take. Then we can help you figure it out!
