where did my lemon tree go?

I do on occasion doubt my sanity.

Last yr after buying this house I had 20 lemons on a small lemon tree. It was my favorite of all my citrus trees. I faithfully watered and fertilized it and was anxiously awaiting the 200 lemons it produced. I was going to share with the neighbors and make lemon bars.

This crop did seem a bit rounder than previous yrs crop. And the color as they ripen seemed a bit different, but what do I know?

Today I picked 2 lemons and cut them open and even ate them. THEY AREN'T LEMONS, THEY'RE ORANGES and they're not even good oranges.

I guess this has to do with grafting. I'm calling my Ag. ext. office. I suppose it will never go back to lemons. We had a few freezes last winter but my tree didn't die back. I'm amazed that this happened.

Probably not that many here are from climates which grow citrus, but took a chance that someone could shed some light on this strange thing. I'll keep the tree even tho I don't like it anymore, cause the birds like to nest in it. Next spring I'll buy a lemon tree from a native nursery.

I guess the saying when life gives you lemons make lemonade doesn't work.

biggles, I do have swarms of bees here because of all the flowers I planted for butterflies, plus they've literally covered my hummingbird feeder and post, at times, to where I couldn't see either.

It would have nothing to do with the bees. The original tree was some kind of graft.

chrisn, interesting that it happened to so many others. Thanks for the link. Curious that it's happened to others who moved into a new home.
