When to trim cactus

I planted some cactus in an area that does not see much rain. Not sure what they are called, but see attached photo. They are doing very well. In fact they are going to need trimming pretty soon. When is a good time to cut them back ( ie fall, spring, etc)

When to trim cactus

Generally, all trimming should be done when the plant is dormant. But I'm not so sure about cactus... Snip off a few inobvious pieces now and see what happens...
