When is it better to put in a new grass?

I live in the mid-west. Is it better to wait until spring to put in new grass or fall is preferred?

Fall for cool season grasses, spring for warm season grasses.

'Mid-west' does not tell us which type you have.

Currently the backyard has no grass at all. I'm thinking if it'll be better off to put grass on the backyard now, wait until spring, or does it matter. I don't know anything about type of grass.

Where exactly are you? As I said, 'mid-west' doesn't tell us anything useful.

Why is there no grass in the backyard?

I'm in Wisconsin. The backyard has some huge pine trees and shrubs and I want to get grid of it and put in a some grass. However, I'm not sure if I should do now or wait.

OK, Wisconsin is cool season grass so planting in fall is the right way to go. That said, unless you get rid of the pine trees, this is always going to be an uphill battle.

I would also consider getting a soil test done to know what you need to add to the soil to make it more habitable for growing grass.

Thanks! I'll definitely chop those pine trees off before seeding. However, would it be as effective with just grass seed spreading on the lawn or do I need to purchase straw blanket seeds like net? I should continue to water until it snow, correct?

Here's what I would do:
Get a soil test
Remove the trees and kill anything else growing in the area where you want grass
Rototill the soil including tilling in any amendments indicated from the soil test
Spread seed and lightly rake into the soil
Keep the seed moist but not damp until it germinates - depending on rain, this can be a light misting as many as three or four times a day but likely less this time of year

Late summer through early fall seeding allows your new grass seedlings time to root well and get established before winter hits. What that actually looks like in your lawn will vary depending on the types of grass you grow and your growing region.

When exactly in the fall should it be planted?

After the peak heat of the summer is over. We sometimes can plant in late August, sometimes have to wait for early September - once the grass in your or other people's yards has started growing again because the temperatures have cooled off and should stay that way, then it's time to plant.

OP posted back in September so this question isn't really so relevant for him anymore. But I live North of Chicago and had seed dropped and blanketed in late October that sat dormant just fine all winter and took off when temps warmed up enough. Got me as early a start as possible on getting the lawn going in the spring.

Sure, it worked but if you want to discuss optimal, you missed the window.

We throw seed out sometimes when there's still snow on the ground and it carries into the soil as the snow melts. We call it seeding the snow.
